Screen-free creative activities for kids in Edinburgh: sand art all year

A wet Edinburgh weekend, a long school holiday, a birthday that needs a plan: children are happiest when their hands are busy. Sand art is a calm, screen-free activity that works in any season.

Why it is time well spent

• Hands busy, screens off. Children peel small paper shapes and sprinkle coloured sand, one shape at a time.
• Focus. Each child works on their own picture, so it suits mixed ages and quieter children as well as lively ones.
• Something to take home. Every child finishes a sand picture, a nice gift for a grandparent.

Works all year round

• Autumn: Halloween parties, half-term and community events.
• Winter: Christmas parties and school or nursery fairs.
• Spring: Easter holidays and spring fairs.
• Summer: summer fairs, gala days and garden parties, with a covered or sheltered spot.
• Any rainy day: it fits indoors, in a living room, a hall or a community centre.

Outdoors: the table needs a covered or sheltered spot, which the organiser provides. Wind and rain do not mix with sand.

Where we come

Children's parties at home or in a hall, school and nursery events, markets, shopping centres and community days across Edinburgh and the Lothians. We bring everything and need about 2x2 m of space.

Children aged 3 and up can join in, with a parent's help for the youngest. We run the activity. Parents, carers or the organiser stay responsible for the children throughout.

• Kids' sand art party: from £130 for up to 10 children, 1 to 1.5 hours
• Extra child: £8
• Extra picture: A6 £5, A5 £6

Designs change with stock. If you would like a theme for the season, ask when you book and we will do our best, but we cannot guarantee a particular design.
